Project: California Proton Treatment Center

Contract Amount: $9,300,000

Start / Completion Date: September 2010 / April 2012
The scope included:
Process and environmental chilled water/heating hot waterPiping systems include copper, carbon steel, stainless steel and PVC. Our controls team installed open architecture controls on both process and environmental systems.

The centerpiece is a 90-ton cyclotron, a machine that accelerates protons to 70% of the speed of light creating a beam that can reach tumors that are up to 14 inches deep.

The most unique aspect of this project is that through super-cooling of the cyclotron core (to about 3° Kelvin) the power draw is reduced to a fraction of that of similar facilities. The beam can also be shaped in three dimensions to avoid harming surrounding healthy tissues, targeting tumors with unprecedented accuracy
